The Future of MetisTools: What’s Coming Next

#Future#Vision#Roadmap#Improvements

MetisTools started as a small side project, but it has grown into something bigger. As the user base expands, I want to share my vision for the future – the features, improvements, and values that will guide development.

Short‑Term Goals (Next 3 Months)

1. More File Conversion Options

I’m working on adding video conversion (e.g., MP4 to GIF, MP4 to MP3) and batch processing for images. These will still happen entirely in your browser using WebAssembly.

2. Offline Mode

I plan to add a service worker so that once you visit the site, you can use many tools even without an internet connection. This is especially useful for travelers or those with spotty connections.

3. User‑Selected Theme Customization

Dark mode is already here. Next, I’ll allow you to choose accent colors and layout density (compact vs. comfortable).

Medium‑Term Goals (3–12 Months)

1. AI‑Assisted Tools (Without Data Collection)

I’m exploring small, on‑device AI models for tasks like:

  • Smart PDF form‑field detection
  • Automatic document classification
  • Optical character recognition (OCR) for scanned PDFs

These models would run locally – your documents never leave your computer.

2. Collaborative Tools

For teams, I want to add shared workspaces where you can invite colleagues to collectively edit a document or convert files together. This would require optional accounts, but accounts will remain free.

3. API for Developers

Many developers have asked for an API to integrate MetisTools’ converters into their own applications. I’m designing a simple REST API with generous free tiers.

Long‑Term Vision (1+ Years)

1. A Fully Decentralized Version

I’m interested in peer‑to‑peer technology. Imagine converting a PDF without any central server – using WebRTC to directly transfer files between users. This would make the site even more private and resilient.

2. Educational Content

I want to expand the blog with tutorials, video guides, and interactive examples that teach people how to use the tools effectively.

3. Open Source

Eventually, I plan to open‑source the entire MetisTools codebase (excluding proprietary AI models). This will allow anyone to audit the code, contribute improvements, or even run their own instance.

Values That Won’t Change

Through all these changes, three core principles remain:

  1. No mandatory accounts – You’ll never be forced to sign up.
  2. Privacy first – Your data stays on your device unless you explicitly choose to share it.
  3. Free as in beer – The essential tools will always be free, supported by non‑intrusive ads.

Help Shape the Future

If you have a feature request or a pain point, please contact me. I read every message, and your feedback directly influences the roadmap.

Together, we can make MetisTools the best free toolbox on the web.
